McNamara wins May Betfred Coach of the Month award

Steve McNamara has been awarded May’s Betfred Coach of the Month following Catalans Dragons impressive unbeaten run over the past month. 

The Dragons have toppled early season front runners St Helens and Wigan Warriors in the last two rounds and now sit joint top of the Betfred Super League table alongside both of last season’s Grand Finalists.

McNamara’s side backed up their closely fought victory against Saints in round seven with an utterly dominant display in the South of France against Adrian Lam’s Wigan Warriors in round eight. They have also defeated a resurgent Hull FC and Wakefield Trinity – both away from home - in rounds five and six.

Over the past month, Catalans have scored an average of 33 points per game and conceded just 11 –Steve McNamara’s team boast the best defensive record across Betfred Super League in May, despite facing three top five teams.

On winning the award, Steve McNamara said: “We are content with the start to the season we’ve had. The consistency of our performances and particularly the results in May have been a direct result of the application by the whole squad and staff. This award is recognition of that.

“We will continue to work hard on all aspects of our preparation and performance which will give us the best opportunity to perform well for the rest of the season.??

Voting was conducted by nine members of the rugby league media who gave their first and second choices for the award – McNamara was selected as first choice by eight of nine panellists.
