Round 9 Team of the Week

After joint leaders St Helens and Wigan Warriors round 9 fixtures were postponed due to Covid-19, Catalans Dragons had the opportunity to move into outright first place with a win against bottom of the league Leigh Centurions.

Man of Steel frontrunner Sam Tomkins was once again integral to Catalans on Saturday, setting up two tries during a narrow victory against Leigh. The Centurions were spirited in defeat but fell short as the Dragons won their fifth league game in a row.

After contrasting Challenge Cup results for Hull FC and Castleford, the black and whites defeated the Tigers away at the Jungle. Castleford started in blistering fashion when debutant 17-year-old winger Jason Qareqare scored with his first touch less than a minute into the contest. However, it wasn’t to be for Castleford in the end – Mahe Fonua a standout for the black and whites with two tries and an assist.

Yet another Jordan Abdull inspired performance helped Hull KR to a convincing victory at home against Salford. Abdull set up two tries and kicked five goals during the Robins 40-4 win. Shaun Kenny-Dowall delivered a captain’s performance for Rovers and finished with a try, 12 tackle busts, 3 clean breaks, 3 offloads and 210 metres from 20 carries.

Josh Charnley scored a hat-trick during Warrington’s win over Wakefield to move into stand alone fifth in the all-time Super League scoring charts. He’s now scored 189 tries and is just 10 tries behind Paul Wellens and Keith Senior who sit in joint third. Gareth Widdop continued his impeccable start to the 2021 campaign, scoring a try and setting up another as the Wolves defeated Trinity 38-18.
